Have you ever thought about the issues to consider before starting precision spreading? Here are some tips to enjoy all benefits.

Welcome back, dear farmer friends! Have you ever thought about the issues to consider before starting precision spreading? Yet, this activity is often carried out improperly. There are many things that can go wrong when spreading, in particular the type and quantity of fertilizer or manure used.

Nowadays, spreaders have become essential tools for agricultural production par excellence along with a reduced environmental impact: here are some tips to enjoy all benefits.

Spreading where and when necessary!

What’s the first rule to avoid mistakes? First of all, it is important to consider cropping systems like small areas with different needs. Don’t view a very wide cornfield as a single entity but as the sum of many lots - each of them having its peculiarities. The purpose of precision spreading is to offer proper nourishment based on the real needs of both crops and the land, in order to optimize the yield and to increase sustainability.

Anyway, before using the latest technologies, it is important to be familiar with your land and the specific needs of your crops, avoiding unnecessary processing that might damage or harm the environment.

How does it work? Here are three aspects you shouldn’t undervalue:

  • Distribution: The equipment makes the difference. If using a one-disc spreader, manure or fertilizers are distributed unequally creating a bothersome overlapping of several layers. On the contrary, the use of a double-disc spreader ensures a uniform distribution even through numerous layers, and over the entire plot. This way, each square meter of soil gets the same quantity of nitrogen avoiding possible losses in the agricultural production.
  • Estimation: How to establish the proper quantity of fertilizer? Maps and satellite data are great help by providing information on the different field areas. Using these tools, we can develop and create production maps that are able to define the specific needs of each micro-area and to establish the ideal quantity of fertilizer needed.
  • Quantity of nitrogen: the right dosing of nitrogen is essential. Either excessive or exiguous quantities have a negative influence on the yield. For this reason it is important to consider the amount of nitrogen naturally present in the soil or infiltrated due to weather events. This way you can provide the soil with the perfect dose of this element creating the ideal mixture of nutrients to improve crop productivity.
